Analysis Google has been spotted testing web technology that a former staff member says will further undermine the already often overlooked choices people make about their browsers.

Alex Russell, who joined Microsoft in June as Partner Program Manager on Edge after more than 12 years as a senior engineer at Google, noted on Twitter the appearance of WebLayer.

Web layer, as Google describes it, is “a high level integration API to support the creation of a browser”. It is a bit like WebView on steroids. WebView is an API in Android and iOS for presenting web content in a native application and forms the basis of WebView in-app (IAB) browsers implemented in apps like Facebook, Microsoft Bing Search, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Pinterest, and Snapchat.

“I can’t express how deeply disappointed I am with the Googlers who let this happen,” Russell wrote. “Google search pulls a Facebook. What massive, destructive, self-sustaining shit.”

Or rather, Google is just trying out Facebook’s captive browser approach to see how that feels.

“This [has] not launched and is an experience that has lasted for over a year for a small percentage of users, ”said André Bandarra, developer advocate at Google, in response to Russell’s concern. “We have looked at the differences between APIs and work is underway to close the gap. We are also looking at what would be needed with respect to documents. “

Is it terrible for privacy? For web developers? For users? Yes Yes Yes

The result, according to Russell, is that when using WebLayer, the Android Google Search app – the contractually mandated search widget adjacent to Android home screens and known as AGSA or AGA – forgets about it. User login status, permissions, extensions and privacy settings. . And given that Android is present on more than 2 billion devices, this change could affect a large number of people without their knowledge or consent if it is deployed on a large scale.

“Is it terrible for confidentiality? For web developers? For users? “Russel demand. “Yes Yes Yes.”

And that does not mean that the current formulation of AGSA, which is based on Chrome custom tabs (CCT), introduced earlier this year to fill in the gaps in WebViews, is also ideal. Russell claims that he partially respects user choice but still ignores user preferences.

Either way, you may think that a search result you got through AGSA, or Google go moreover, will load in the browser of your choice when you click on it. In the current incarnation of AGSA, this is only true if you’ve chosen Chrome as your default browser on Android.

And under WebLayer, you get a separate, WebView-like, Chrome-based pseudo-browser that’s separate from the one chosen as the default device – at least that’s how this experimental technology looks right now.

It’s like Google is going backwards in terms of the browsing experience on Android. Essentially right now if you open a link from the Android search widget it’s still handled by Chrome with seemingly some user preferences being ignored, and in the WebLayer experience even that doesn’t happen: links open in a separate pseudo-browser from your device. browsers and their settings.

As Russell explained to The register, it is not really a browser because WebLayer does not handle normal browsing on the device and you cannot install it as a browser. And the problem – regardless of user choice – is similar for other browser plumbing APIs like WebView and CCT.

The choice of browser is actually quite substantial, or at least it has been for regulators in the past. Recall that from 2001 to 2011, Microsoft was obliged, due to its antitrust regulation consent decree, to provide Windows users with the choice of browser, and from 2009 to 2014, in the EU, it presented to users a browser choice screen.

Browser choice is also important for publishers, said Russell, because the non-standard behavior of WebLayer can adversely affect login rates, hamper autofill forms used for purchase and checkout flows, interrupt functionality of WebLayer. re-engagement such as installing PWA and enabling push notification, and interfering with data used to make ads effective, such as placement assignment.

The problem is that while you, as a mobile device user, may have set a preferred default browser, that choice is not honored by AGSA or by apps that create a browser. Franken-Navigator from APIs such as WebLayer, WebView or CCT.

These concerns are not new to Russell, who has spent years championing the web as a platform, and in April, while still at Google, pointed out The problems Apple’s browser restrictions are taking their toll on the web ecosystem.

But Russell isn’t alone in saying browser makers continue to interfere with user choice. Web developers have complained for years about Apple’s insistence that all iOS browsers run WebKit under the hood and how its disinterest in implementing certain web APIs has allowed web applications to fail. not compete with native applications. And they did so despite Apple’s claim over antitrust complaints that those who don’t like App Store rules can compete by building web apps.

“The mobile web is only a pale shadow of its potential, as the vector of progress that has generated steady gains for two decades has silently eroded to the benefit of native application platforms and developers,” Russell said in a statement. blog post in July. “These attacks on the commons are rooted in a shared disrespect for the sanctity of user choice, substituting the agenda of application and operating system developers for the mediation of a champion of the user.”

The register asked Google if anyone wanted to comment, but we got no response.

Microsoft could do better here, too. The presumably reformed monopoly has modified Windows 11 to make it more difficult to switch browsers. It made Edge the default for Windows 11 during installation and will use Edge unless the user selects a different browser to handle specific file types and links. Windows users have the choice of a different browser, but making that choice requires more effort than before. ®

With Windows 11 build 2200.65, Microsoft removed the option to activate the old Windows 10 Start menu. While this change caused a sensation on the web, there is another Start menu update that raised some people. In the latest version of Windows 11, Microsoft added a search box to the Windows 11 Start menu.

It’s always a little funny to see people, myself included sometimes, take the lead on an icon or feature in a preview version of an operating system, but there are a few aspects of the search box that arrive in the Windows 11 Start menu that are worth breaking up.

Searching the Start menu is not new

Windows once had a search box on the Start menu. The Windows 7 Start menu which is loved by many had a search box. And while Windows 10 didn’t have a search box in the Start menu, it did have the option to search by typing after clicking the Start button. In fact, typing after clicking the Start button was a shortcut to finding multiple generations of Windows.

VPN offers: lifetime license for $ 16, monthly plans for $ 1 and more

It’s a bit redundant to have a search box on the start menu while you can also have Search directly next to the start menu. But some people prefer the Start menu to act as a hub for multiple tasks. Others may not know that you can search for items from the taskbar. Adding another search field is useful in both cases.

The current user interface is a bit odd

The current implementation of start menu search is janky. When you click in the text box for Search, the Start menu closes and the Search menu opens from the taskbar. In a way, the search box on the Start menu isn’t even a feature as much as another shortcut to search from the taskbar. For what it’s worth, typing after pressing Start has the same janky jump from menu to menu yet.

Windows 11 is not finished

Windows Update 11 Windowsupdate Estimate New DarkSource: Daniel Rubino / Windows Central

Sometimes we have to remember that this is a preview version of an operating system that is months away from delivery. Look at the number of changes made with the most recent version of Insider for Windows 11. The search box may be moved or deleted multiple times before the operating system ships. Microsoft also has time to fine-tune the user interface, such as making a smooth transition from the Start menu to the search user interface rather than closing one menu and switching to another.

Of course, people can be passionate about anything they love, but it’s worth putting this change in context. With months before the release of Windows 11, this search box may be optional or in a very different state when most people first see it.

Google has made some visual updates to Gmail’s search box.

It updated the advanced search icon and prompt text for Gmail and Chat users.

It introduced an updated icon to access advanced search options. The location of icons has also been changed.

“When you click on that icon, you get a visual interface that integrates Gmail’s advanced search operators to help you find specific emails,” Google explained in a blog post.

Regarding the updated prompt text for Gmail and Chat users, those who use Gmail and Google Chat, the hint text in the search box will now say “search all conversations”.

If users are only using Gmail, there will be no change and the text will still say “search email”.

There are no updates to any functionality with this update, it is just a user interface update, the tech giant said.

Separately, it also extends the rollout of the new improved Google Chat UI for all users.

It had announced various improvements to Google Chat on the web (i.e. chat.google.com) and the Progressive Chat Web App (PWA) in March 2021.

At that time, these changes were only initiated for domains where the Gmail service was enabled.

As of June 30, 2021, these changes will also be applied to domains with the Gmail service disabled.

“The new interface gives users a consistent and predictable chat experience across the Chat surfaces in Gmail and Standalone Chat. It also includes new integrations to improve productivity, ”he said.

The Windows 10 taskbar search box takes up a lot of space. If you want to create more space in the taskbar, you can reduce its size or remove it entirely.

One of the features of Windows 10 since a few versions has been a Windows search box that Cortana lived in. And it takes up a good chunk of taskbar space. If you prefer to have more room in the taskbar for icons, you can get rid of it. Here’s how.

Windows 10 search box

If you’re new to Windows 10 or have been using it for a while now, you’ll like this tip. This makes more room for other items you might want on the taskbar.

Windows 10 search box

The Windows search box is next to the Start button. But it takes a lot of space in the taskbar.

When you search for an app, file, or other items, a search results box will appear with the best matches. It also includes features at the top that allow for more in-depth and specific research if you need it.

Hide Windows 10 search box

To remove the search box, you have several options. Right-click in the area or in an empty area next to it on the taskbar. From the menu go to Search and you can choose to simply Show search icon or select Hidden.

    Search icon

First, here’s a look at how only the search icon is displayed – it looks like a magnifying glass and is just a button. You can still click on it to search, but it frees up a lot of the space on the taskbar.

    search icon only

In the following example, I turned it off completely – it’s all gone. This gives you a nice and clean appearance on the taskbar and easy access to the start button.

    deleted search icon

If you want to make even more room, you can also get rid of the Cortana and Task View buttons. Right click on the taskbar and uncheck them in the menu.

remove cortana and task view

Here’s what it looks like with the Search, Cortana, and Task View buttons removed. Only the Start button remains and you can directly access your applications in the taskbar.

everything has been deleted

So, how to search for Windows 10?

So now you might be wondering how to search for Windows 10 with search box and button removed? It’s simple. Hit it Windows key on your keyboard and start typing your query. When you start typing, the Windows search box appears. For example, here I just hit the Windows key and started typing my search for Windows administrative tools.

search for administration tools

That’s all we can say about it. Whether or not you want to remove the Search button completely, let alone the Task View and / or Cortana buttons, just getting rid of the entire box saves a lot of space for other things.

It should be noted that the Task View button will display the Windows Timeline feature. If you don’t use this feature, you can go ahead and remove the button. And I don’t know a lot of people who use Cortana on their PCs anyway – so removing that button just gives you more taskbar space.

Google has rolled out a new search shortcut that can quickly help you narrow down the results you get. Now, when you are on a results page, you can simply press “https://www.engadget.com/” to expand the search box. As noticed by 9to5Google, the tech giant has started notifying users about the new shortcut in a box in the lower left corner, which appears when you press any key on a results page.

When using the shortcut, you will be taken directly to the search box where the text cursor will appear next to your original query. The search box will expand even with common search suggestions related to the term you entered for the first time. This makes it ideal for use when you want to expose your original search – for example, if you want to refine the results page to show links to pages on the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra instead of the variant. non-Ultra – although you can also use “https://www.engadget.com/” for new search terms if you wish.

As 9to5Google notes, this feature joins the accessibility shortcut of tabs for google search. Pressing the tab button on a results page highlights links, allowing you to open websites without using a mouse or trackpad.

Do you remember Clippy? The anthropomorphic paperclip assistant was once a key feature of Microsoft’s Office suite of products and often helped users with suggestions on letter writing etc.

While Clippy is long gone, Microsoft recently replaced it with a feature of Office 2016 known as “Tell me. “Or, if you’re using the latest version of Office 365 and Office 2019, a feature known as Microsoft search box. In this Office 365 guide, we’ll take a look at what the Microsoft search box can do for you.

A quick explanation of the Microsoft search box

The Microsoft search box is universal in Office 365 applications such as Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. He lives on top of the ribbon and is out of your way. It’s very different from Clippy, who was known to show up at the most awkward moments. Either way, the Microsoft search box can help you do a few things. It is designed so that you can type in words or phrases about what you want to do next, and will help you access those features. You can even save time by invoking it with the Alt + Q buttons on your keyboard.

Microsoft search box features in Office 365

When you click on the Microsoft search box, the search will remember what you last asked it to do. It may also suggest actions you might want to take depending on what you are working on. Additionally, if you’re using a professional version of Office 365, you’ll also see a list of people you collaborate with and files you’ve recently worked on in that search box. Finally, if you’re lost and you don’t know where to find a specific feature of the Office 365 app you’re in, the search box can help you find what you’re looking for.

The Microsoft search box is also smart enough to help you find the definition of a word. Just type the word into the Microsoft search box and Bing will tell you what it means. But, if you are looking for extended results, you can also always click on the definition and open the search pane to see more details about Bing.

This pane will have tabs for Knowledge, Files, Web, and Images. Knowledge will give you a definition or more information on a subject. Files will search your organization’s files for the word you searched for. Web will show you a list of web results. Pictures, meanwhile, will search for Bing images for your query.

Just the start of what Office 365 can do for you

The Microsoft search box is just one of the many features that Office 365 can help you with. So far in our coverage, we’ve highlighted how you can use it in your small business, stay healthy at work, and even improve your workflow. Stay tuned to OnMSFT for all of your Office 365 news and information, and don’t hesitate to let us know if you’ve used Microsoft Search in Office 365 before by leaving us a comment below.

Google’s Chrome web browser displays a search box on the web browser’s New Tab page by default. Web browser users may have noticed three things: first, that the search box is not showing if most search engines are selected, second, that personalization options are only provided if Google is selected. like search engine, and third, that the search field is wrong.

To note: If you select Bing Search, you might notice that the search box is not wrong. It works just like the search box on the Bing homepage.

Google placed the search box on Chrome’s New Tab page in 2012 and has kept it there ever since. The sole purpose of the search box is to provide users with another option to search using Google search. Activation, however, does not return any search results. The only effect of clicking or tapping on the search field is that the address bar field is activated.

In other words: the search box redirects the entry to the address bar. Users could use the address bar immediately instead and there would be no difference.

Some web browser users may not like the functionality. I don’t like it because it doesn’t offer any advantage over performing searches directly from the address bar.

Google Chrome offers an experimental flag that users can turn on that turns the bogus search box into a real search box.

Note that this only works if Google Search is the search engine in the Chrome browser.

real search field new chrome tab

Here is how it is done:

  1. Load the following address by entering it in the Chrome address bar: chrome: // flags /
  2. Find the actual search box on the New Tab page. You can also skip the first two steps by loading chrome: // flags / # ntp-realbox directly.
  3. Set the flag status to On.
  4. Restart the Chrome browser.

When you open a New Tab page in Chrome after restarting and start typing in the search box, you will notice that it is now active and no longer redirects to the address bar. Google Chrome returns suggestions as you type based on browsing history but also Google search.

Do you know that Google search bar you see when you open a new tab in Google Chrome? Well, this is not a “real” search box. In fact, it just redirects all activity to your browser’s address bar and doesn’t return any search results in the new tab page. Frankly, it’s little more than an unnecessary decoration, at least by default.

Turns out there’s a hidden setting in Chrome’s flag menu that can turn the new tab screen’s search bar into a legitimate Google search box, with search results auto-filling as you go. as you type, and it’s pretty easy to activate. Here’s how (via gHacks):

  • In Google Chrome on computer, go to chrome: // flags /
  • To look for “Real search field in the New Tab page” in the search bar,
  • Click on the drop-down list and select “Enabled.”
  • Close the browser window for the changes to take effect.
  • The next time you open Chrome, the search bar on the New Tab page will work as a legitimate search bar.

Note that this will only work if Chrome’s search engine is set to Google. You can check it by going to chrome: // parameters /, Click on “Search engine” in the left menu, then use the drop-down list to set “Search engine used in the address bar” to Google.

John Mueller of Google recently explained that a sitelink search box can take up to a month to appear in search results.

This topic arose during a Google Webmaster Central Hangout where a question was asked regarding how long it takes for a sitelink search box to show up in the SERPs.

Compared to other types of markup, a sitelink search field can take a long time to display.

Mueller says it’s because Google wants to make sure it’s something that will be available on a site in the long run.

With other types of markup, Google may crawl it once or twice and then show it in search results. However, a sitelink search box can take up to a month to display.

So don’t be discouraged if you’ve implemented sitelink search box markup that you don’t see in Google yet.

Mueller also states that Google is not required to display a sitelink search box just because markup is being used.

As with any other type of structured data, Google can decide whether or not to display a rich result. It usually depends on the usefulness of a researcher’s query.

Listen to Mueller’s full response below, starting at 43:06:

“One of the things I’ve seen with the sitelinks search box is that if you set up the markup for it on your site, then it’s something that takes a long time to actually get into effect.

So it’s not like other types of content where we can maybe crawl this page once or twice and then we can show that kind of rich result in the search results.

A sitelink search box is something we really need to see in the long term. Sometimes it takes a month, maybe even longer, to show up in search results.

Google is in the process of making some changes to Pixel Launcher, which means it’s time for third-party launchers to catch up. Action Launcher has been leading the way when it comes to adopting Pixel elements, but here’s Nova Launcher with a redesigned search box, Pixel 2-style notification dots, and more. However, you will need the full version to get everything new.

Updated Pixel Launcher features are available in the latest beta version of Nova, version 5.5-beta3. Here is what you get.

  • Search bar in dock (Nova settings – Dock – Search bar in dock – Icons above or below)
  • Android 8.1 style context menu (Nova Settings – Appearance – Context menu – Blocks)
  • Adaptive icon animations when dragging and dropping
  • Improved the speed of applying a new responsive icon shape or icon theme
  • Many fixes and optimizations under the hood

The search box can be placed at the bottom of your screen above or below the favorites tray. You also have all the usual customization options for the dock. Nova has had a few notification badge options for a while, but now it has Oreo-style dots with the notification pop-up. You can long press the icons to access notifications directly. The layout is the same as the Pixel 2 version of the launcher, which is a bit more compact than the old one. Action Launcher added dots and notifications a while back, but it’s still OG Pixel style.

You must join the beta program on the Play Store if you want to access it. Alternatively, there is an APK that you can download Mirror APK.
